This a common question in Cortona: where is Under the Tuscan Sun house?
Good news. The famous house from the book “Under The Tuscan Sun” by Frances Mayes is within walking distance from Cortona town center.
Everyone who has lived or worked in Cortona in the last 15 years have been asked at least once how to get to Bramasole, or “Under the Tuscan Sun” house.
First of all, I must say (if you don’t know already!) that there are two houses. The “original villa” from Under the Tuscan Sun book is the home of the writer Frances Mayes and her husband Ed. Then there is the villa where the movie was set, the Hollywood movie “Under the Tuscan Sun” with Diane Lane. If you are interested, I wrote an article (link) about the differences between the movie and the book.
Bramasole, Frances Mayes’ house, is within walking distance from Cortona town center. It is a private villa along a public road – beautiful house and beautiful scenery. Of course, there is not much to see from outside, but if you are a fan of the book you might want to see it in person! It’s a nice walk from the town, approximately 2 km, walking through the Parterre public gardens (one of my favorite things to do!) and then continuing towards Torreone.

If you want to drive you will have to drive around the hill (the villa is right on the back side). Just reach Torreone and at the bar continue on the left, towards the tennis club – the Villa will be on your right after 1 km.
The villa where the movie was set is a private villa, approximately 3 km from Cortona going down the hill towards Pergo. You can’t really see it from outside but it is available for rent (Villa Laura).
