Good Friday’s Procession
19 April 2019 @ 16:30 – 23:00
Good Friday’s (“venerdì santo” in Italian) procession is a long tradition in Cortona, a religious celebration commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus during the Holy Week before Easter. At 9 pm the procession traditionally starts from the church of Spirito Santo and continues on a route through the historical center, touching several churches, climbing up the hill and ending in the main square (Piazza della Repubblica). Every church on the route joins the procession with men carrying beautiful wooden statues – every church has a different statue, cetnuries old, representing Jesus Christ’s Passion. Worth seeing and following the procession around town, really evocative atmosphere!
